Abstract:

Chiefly portrait sketches and woodblock portraits executed by Franz Geritz in the early 1920s. Among the subjects are actors, dancers and other entertainers. Identified subjects of original works: Verna Gordon in "Javanese Dance", Isabel Latimore, Nicholas Roerich, Christopher Carson, John Ferguson, Jeannette Abel, Jacob Lukin as "The Demon" and "A Magyar" (self portrait). Subjects depicted in clippings include Lucien Muratore, Alla Nazimova, Frank Keenan, Philine Falco, Hubert Stowitts, William Conselman and Mina Conselman. Also includes a few landscapes, including depictions of Mount Shasta, Mono Lake and Lake Arrowhead.

Franz Geritz (1895-1945): born in Budapest, Hungary; immigrated to the United States in 1909; lived in Chicago and Philadelphia before moving to California; graduated from California College of Arts and Crafts (Oakland) in 1921; studied under Perham Nahl, Xavier Martinez, and Frank Van Sloun; settled in Los Angeles in the early 1920s; married Josephine Heintz in 1927; taught at University of California Extension, Los Angeles; died in Los Angeles.
